Garage Door Opener Remotes – How to program your garage door opener remotes

Whether you have your garage door opener installed by a professional or you do it yourself. There will come a time when you need to replace lost remote controls or add another remote control. The garage door opener remotes will most certainly be programmed by the professional during the initial installation.

However, programming a new garage door opener remote or reprogramming an existing one is very simple to do. The first thing to consider is if you want to wipe out all existing system codes. If you do this, all remotes and any keypad must be reprogrammed to work with the door. If you are just adding a new remote control to the system, the codes do not have to be wiped out first. The codes should be cleared if you are replacing lost remotes (just in case someone finds the remote).

To wipe out all system codes you must locate the learn button on your garage door opener. This button, in most cases, is on the rear side of the operator. If you do not find the button on the rear, it is probably located on the side or front of the operator. In most cases the button is purple, red or green. Once the learn button is located, press the button for about 20 seconds. This will clear out the codes for all existing garage door opener remotes.

Now you are ready to program the garage door opener remotes. Take each garage door opener remote control, one by one, and place it near the learn button. Press the button on the remote control and hold it down. While this button is pressed, push the learn button and release it.You will hear a click or see the garage door opener light blink. This indicates the remote control is programmed. Now release the remote control button. Do this for each remote control you wish to use with the garage door opener.
